09.1 Template file and Setup info


So to start off our project you first have to model the existing house to which the extension will added onto. This post has the template files for you to use with the same objects and wall types which are listed below, the modeling of the existing house is pretty simple stuff but for new user this information is key to them to see how the project starts, for more advanced user if you want to skip this step/video, you can download the 'existing house' revit file and join in the next step/post. For those who do watch this video i added some internal doors after i finished the video, these can be seen in the 'existing house' revit file also you may as well just download all the files posted for a reference. The video is at the bottom of the this post

09.00 - House Extension Project - Introduction

Hello all,

In the next series of posts, I'll build a mini project of a house extension, its a single story extension and 1 half is a glass window and the the other brickwork, the roof is tile or slate and has 2 skylights with light well internally, the project is based on a job i did for my brother a couple of years ago and it gives you an opportunity to model something in a good amount of detail without taking too long as the project scale is small. It is also the project you see in the left hand side of my logo(the section view).

Below is a general outline of whats coming up, in the the next post I'll itemise the components we are going to use and post a template file for you to use and follow. I may re post the model a couple of times during the process if i come across new objects we need to place. if you look closely below there is a 'To do list' which points out what we need to do to complete this project.
This project will be done in metric measurement but i will post imperial dimensions and objects, just thought i 'd mix it up a bit.

08.2 Revisions - Part 2 (design options)

In this weeks post about a major revision to a project we talk about making the change through design options. We'll modify the basement to make it larger. 
Original design

New design


Occasionally a situation occurs where two or more areas change in a building in the same revision, one of the changes is definite and one is not(the client might be review their options or want to see a price comparison). Effectively you need to keep the definite change & (the none definite change or the original design), To allow you to do this we setup design options. In the design option tab we setup a design option set and 3 option( New layout, old layout and off) the 'off' is just a helper for me to see what items I've already added to the design options, the items should disappear in my 3d view.
  • The first step is to review the changes,
  • Then add the objects that are effected to the design options,
  • Make the changes in the model
  • Switch between the options using visibility graphics(vg)
  • Open a 3D cut section view and review the area for potential other changes that you cant see in the 2D views, and finally
  • Make a new revision and bubble the changes in the printing sheets.

08.1 - Revision to a project - Part 1

In this post we start to look at a major revision to a projects and it involves, it was one of the the most requested post that I've received to date. I'm going to take the project that we did in the 06 Chapter of my blog and use that model as a base, it will be the original design. Below is a very basic sketch of the changes that we are going to do, on the top the original shape and below the new design. There are 2 changes I'll cover just to give the changes some variety;

  1. Roof Shape change from round to butterfly
  2. Basement extension  
Here is my top 10 list for Revision / Changes
  1. Save a backup of the model if its a major change/revision, if you're using worksets you should detach from the central file through >file>open>select central file and before selecting open tick the detach from central option, save the new central file, make a new local file
  2. Pdf's and Acad Dwg's should also act as backup documents
  3. Assess the changes in the model, enter different views like sections and plans, you can draw drafting lines quickly to help you visualise the changes and impact
  4. Assess which method you are going to use for the changes, is it going to be a 1)design option, where you keep the existing design in the model as well or do you do 2) a complete change meaning deleting the old option from the model completely. Both options have there advantages and disadvantages.
  5. Begin Basic Changes (system families) and review the larger picture changes in perspectives and other views
  6. Begin advanced changes (Family components, beams, sweeps etc.) as these are more fiddly and only want to be changed once they should be done after system families as set in position assuming the system families working in their revised location.
  7. Delete outstanding object from old design
  8. Review all sheets and views and note down where the changes/revisions are seen/affected
  9. Fix any annotation,  text notes, dims, tags etc. in all views affected
  10. Apply the revision clouds to views and sheets and then apply the revision notes and tags, print and export Pdf's/Acad then issue
