11.2 Families, nested parameters access and visibilty settings

This next post talks about when you load a family into another family(nesting), then in the project environment how do you access the parameters of the original family.
The key is
  1. To make the parameters in the first family 'Instance' not 'Type', load it into the 2nd family(host) 
  2. Then in the 2nd family(host) create a duplicate parameter in the 'Type' dialogue box. 
  3. Now select the 1st family that's placed in the 2nd one and in the 'Properties' dialogue select the grey box to the right and make the parameter equal the new parameter, it should then grey out the value.
  4. Load 2nd family into the project and now you should be able to modify the parameters of the first family even though its not directly loaded into the project.
The second part of the video is to do with visibility of objects by either changing the 'visibility settings' and deciding weather to not show the geometry or annotation in plan, section & elevation (left/right/front/back) or by level of detail, course/medium or fine view. But that's not all, you can actually set if somethings can be turned on or off in the project environment by
  1. Selection the object or geometry
  2. In the Properties dialogue box beside the visibility setting click the grey box
  3. Create a new 'yes/no' parameter(automatically selected) decide weather its instance or type
  4. Load into project environment and play with the yes/no for visibility setting
You may ask when would you use this, there is several examples, one easy one is say you have a family of desks lined up in a row and you have 3 types (1 desk, 2 desks and 3 desks) you can set desk 1 to always be on or no visibility parameter for it, desk 2 is on visibility parameter 'D2' and is turned on in the type '2 desks' and '3 desks' and desk 3 is on visibility parameter 'D3' and is only turned on in the '3 desks' type. Simple example but effective, I would love to hear some other example from you all for this type parameter settings?

11.1 Slope That Family

The next few posts are going to revolve around families and just releasing some of the advanced user setting that tend to get lost in the mix. the first one is on formulas, I made this family over a year ago and took me about 3 days to get working and then 2 days later audodesk released sloped columns in revit so it ended up being a waste of time but it is a good introduction to formulas and equations. The principal is the right angled triangle (http://www.visualtrig.com/Default.aspx) and which values you know and using Cosine, Sine and Tan to work out either the angle or one of the lengths. With this family we want the column depth to be consistent (perpendicular to the face) when sloped at different angles, for this to happen the horizontal distance needs to increase or decrease. We also use a top offset value(L) to force the angle change into the geometry. again this is just an introduction, maybe we can work into something harder near the end of the series. The LRUG (London Revit User Group) are also doing families in their next meeting so i can report any tricks i learn from that.

When you define the Angle;
H (reporting Parameter of the 2 reference levels)
L (Instance parameter)(top offset) H * tan(90-A)
A (Type parameter) (Angle) 
Width (Type parameter)
Column Depth (Type Paramter) (Perpendicular to the face)
HD (Horizontal Depth renamed from Depth and changed to Instance parameter) Column Depth /cos (90-A)

10.1 Line types and settings

One of my followers asked if i could do a video on making a new line types, so here it is, it effectively has 2 parts;
1) The line pattern(the dash style and length and the space length) 
2) The line style(Colour, line weight number and the line pattern(1)

I've also included a quick note on object styles, room separation lines and units

09.8 House Extension - Sheets and general round up

Alright Folks, Sorry for the lack of blogging over the last few weeks, have been moving house, we all know what a pain that is, with packing, cleaning, living out of boxes for a couple of weeks not knowing where anything is packed. Any way we're in now and have a nice garden for BBQ's so back to normal service,




I plan to wrap up this chapter the house extension here with a few small things on sheets, elevations and plans, nothing to revolutionary. Then next posting i plan to migrate to revit 2012, hopefully it works on my laptop(its pushing 4.5 year now) and talk about some of the new features in which I'm interested in such as splitting elements into parts( the layers in walls and floors etc.) and some other stuff as well. I need to pick out a new detail to base the chapter on as well, any suggestions are welcome, if not I'll scroll through a few magazines until i find a detail that might come ac cross as hard to do in revit and looks good as well. 

So in this post we talk about,
  • Setting up sheets
  • Project Information tab
  • Creating a sheet schedule to quickly rename and number drawings(manual, no plug-in)
  • Dragging views to sheets
  • Having a different displayed name of a view on a sheet,(especially when view names are associated to levels visible in elevations and sections
  • Annotation Crop settings and draw backs
  • Special trick to liven up your elevations(open 3d view and select all object behind the extension, tab over to the elevation, then override graphics in view, half tone)
  • Line Work tool and blue grips
  • Why its not a great idea to duplicate sections or elevations as they leave a marker exactly on top of the original marker and you see two sheet numbers and view numbers on top of each other.
  • Tab when dimensioning to get points for un-parallel dimensioning
Next chapter I'll shift over to revit 2012, any suggestion for a topic welcome
